These days, it is not hard to see “gamification” applied in both learning and teaching. Today’s learners are digital natives because they grow up with it. Therefore, teachers are also gradually approaching technological methods into their teaching to catch up with students’ needs and requirements as well as shorten the generation gap with their students. One of the most common technological studying means that are both used by learners and teachers is gamification. In this blog, we are going to find out why and how gamification is used in education as well as having a look at apps that are applied the technique.
Since gamification is now widely used in classes, I am personally always curious about the secret reason behind gamification that works effectively for learners. According to Kapp (2012), gamification in teaching and learning is the application of “game-based mechanics, aesthetics and game thinking which help to engage people in activities, create motivation for action, promote learning as well as solve problems”. In other words, gamification in education can be seen as a tool to boost motivation which helps learners to be more engaged in the studying process. As a result, they can achieve the better learning outcome.
“You create these communities around the game that do an incredible amount of intellectual work, and when they’re done with the work, they will leave the game and go to another game that’s more challenging. Can you image if we had that kind of environment in classrooms?”
(Huang & Soman 2013)
Kahoot is a popular website that apply gamification in studying
Gabe Zichermann, founder and chief executive at Dopamine Inc., used to say in an interview with The Insider that the use of gamification helps to boost the figure of the abilities to learn new skills up to 40% (Giang 2013). This remarkable number shows that game approaches is creating high level motivation and commitment to learners that allows them to be fully engaged and getting involved in activities in their learning process. This is the reason why gamification is gradually becoming commonly used in education.
Despite the fact that gamification is bringing a lot of benefits to the studying and learning process, just like other learning and teaching methods, gamification still has certain limitations that need to be careful when using. Therefore, how to use game approaches effectively in education has always been a hard question for teachers.
According to Kiryakova, Angelova, and Yordanova (2014), there are four main steps to effectively apply gamification in teaching and learning.
Determining learners’ characteristics so that teachers can decide whether should the technique be used
Defining learning objectives clearly so that teachers can set up suitable approach for the learners
Creating the educational content and activities for gamification in order to enhance the interactivity, engagement so that learners can easily achieve the learning objects
Last but not least, adding game elements and mechanisms to complete the process.
These steps are mainly used to guide teachers and even learners to know how and who gamification should be applied in different contexts. As understanding clearly the steps, teachers, and learners can take full advantage of gamification while controlling the limitations of the method.
The video below is a few sharing of me about some apps and websites that applying gamification into learning that I find quite effective and are being widely used.
Gamification is bringing tremendous benefits to both learners and teachers in education. Therefore, it is now gradually becoming widely used in the teaching and learning process. However, there are existing limitations of gamification that users should be aware in order to achieve the study goals comprehensively.
Huang, W & Soman, D 2013, ” A Practitioner’s guide to gamification of education”, University of Toronto, retrieved from 28 April 2021, <file:///C:/Users/Lenovo%20Thinkpad/Downloads/GuideGamificationEducationDec2013.pdf>.
These days, along with the fast modern living pace, people are getting busier than ever. As a consequence, both potential physical and mental health risks are becoming concerning issues. Therefore, a solution can support controlling health problems while still allow users to keep up with the living pace is a need. The appearance of mobile apps that using gamification can be seen as salvage at the moment.
Although people know that they need to do something to improve their health, going to the gym, yoga class or joining meditation sessions seem to be too hard since they are packed with their work and daily basis. Understanding the needs of the users, there are many health apps are published to meet the demand of the users which is creating as many opportunities as possible to taking care of health problems in a strict time condition.
According to King, Greaves, Exeter & Darzi (2013), mobile apps are effective platforms for delivering health interventions. Gamification on apps has contributes to smoking cessation and encouraging medication adherence, which can hardly be done without repeating reminders. It can be seen that gamification is changing their users’ behaviour.
The repeating reminders and short workout exercises lead to a good habit of doing exercise when they have time. Moreover, gamification elements on health apps are also focusing on creating encouragement and motivation for users so that they can be more health aware.
The podcast below are some of my sharing about “Gamification” as well as an app healing app called “Headspace”.
Making podcast is a very new experience for me since I haven’t tried doing this before. Therefore, it was definitely struggling at first since I had no idea where to start. However, after watching all of the video that are provided in Moodle, I finally could set up the plan for my podcast.
In making process, planning is the most helpful step in order to create a quality podcast since without a well-made plan, it will be very hard to deliver your message to the audience. I started my making process by quickly brainstorm ideas about the topic I want to share. After that, I move on to doing research to improve my viewpoint as well as provide clear evident for the podcast so that it will be easier to persuade the audiences.
In making podcast process, I consider script writing is the most important part since without a good and detailed script, it is very hard to create a smooth podcast. The fluency is very crucial to keep the listeners attention and allow them to catch up with the content that I am trying to deliver. Moreover, a detailed script also makes me feel more comfortable while speaking since I did not need to keep thinking about what I should say or how can I deliver an idea.
The most important part of a podcast is the audio since it is the only way that the host can communicate with their audience. Therefore, everything that is spoken in the podcast needs to be clear and fluent so that the audience can easily understand the message that the host want to deliver to them. In my recording process, since English is not my mother tongue, so if I want to create a podcast with perfect pronunciation and good fluency, I have to practice a lot by keep recording and choose out the best one. This step is very challenging for me since it is extremely hard to speak everything accurately but also have to try to create the suitable atmosphere of the podcast at the same time. Therefore, this step is one of the most time and effort consuming part in the entire podcast making process.
Moreover, a good podcast also requires a good interaction with the audiences. Creating interaction in a podcast is extremely hard since there are no images or visual effects, everything has to be transmitted through voice. Therefore, instead of reading along to the script, I have to make it sound like I’m presenting my topic, not reading out loud.
I use Audacity for my editing process and I am impressed by how simple it was to use. Audacity does not take me, as a beginner, much time to get used to it. Even though Audacity is a simple editing platform, it creates high quality final products. So I believe that Audacity is a very suitable audio editing platform for not only beginners but also for people who are trying to create high quality audio products such as podcast or music beat.
At the end, I found that making podcast is not an easy task since it requires a lot of different kinds of technique and it also takes a lot of effort to create a quality one. However, it can be really fun and interesting at the same time.
From video making experience that I got from previous assignments, at the beginning, I thought that the making process for assignment 3’s video will not be too challenging. However, the differences between 2-3 minutes video and 7 minutes video are pretty vivid especially when it comes to editing process. However, even though 7 minutes seem to be extremely long at first, it turns out to be manageable if the script is well-planned.
I chose the last topic as my main content for my video. In this video, I did not completely follow the given topic since I did not really agree to that to some extents. That’s why I decided to make my video base on my new idea. However, the new idea is also developed based on the given topic but it’s just in an opposite direction.
I started my planning process by writing the script. But before the, in order to have enough information for the script, I started brainstorming main ideas that I would like to show in the video. Then, I did a lot of research based on ideas that I has just developed and find examples to strongly support for these ideas. After having everything I want to be in the video content, I move on finding out the ways to make the video become more interesting and interactive to the audience and I came up with the interview idea. After deciding what I want to be in the video, I started writing my script. The writing script part for this assignment was not as hard as the previous time since I organized and planned everything carefully in advanced. However, since the amount of information that is needed to be delivered in 7 minutes is a lot. Therefore, the script was very time consuming and took a lot of effort.
Even though I’m quite happy with content that is delivered in the video, there are definitely a lot of rooms for improvement in term of filming technique. Filming shot and angles in the video is fairly simple. A-roll parts make up to 80% of the video and the other 20% of B-roll shots are from online sources. After finishing 3 assignments, I recognised that there is no improvement in my filming skills since I just use a lot from Internet sources. Therefore, I definitely need to practice more with filming technique if I want to create quality video in the future.
In term of editing process, a 7-minute video is pretty challenging for me. While editing has always been one of my weaknesses, editing for video that lasts for 7 minutes requires paying a lot of attention to detail since I can easily missed small point without recognition. When it comes to editing process, I realized the importance of a well-planned script. Even though I spent a lot of time creating a detailed script, it was still challenging in the editing process because I video tapes can be easily mixed up together. After finishing the video, I was not totally happy with my final product since there are a lot of editing mistakes. However, with the limited ability in editing, I believed that I tried my best.
However, I have problem with managing time for the video. At first I thought 7 minutes video will be challenging since it can very hard to make a video that long. However, after finishing editing, I realized that 7 minutes is not that long. My video is up to 8 minutes 40 seconds but I could not cut it down since if I cut any part out, the content will not be delivered comprehensively. Therefore, even though knowing that my video goes over time limit, I decided to not cut it down. That’s also a lesson for me to pay attention while writing script.
At the end, I was not happy with my video since I can see a lot of room for improvement. However, I was not skillful enough to fix all these mistakes. Therefore, I have to keep practicing in order to improve my technique.
Technology has become a huge part of people in our digital age. The appearance of AI can be seen as a significant mark of the worldwide technological development. It is undeniable that people get huge advantage from AI. However, AI has been one of the most controversial issues recently. Therefore I want to make a video to demonstrate why AI is still controversial while it brings a lot of benefits to people. In this video, I want to show negative aspects that can also affect people.
During making process, I have realized that it took a lot of effort to create a video. They require a lot of different steps. I started working on my video by setting up the main idea and the message that I want to deliver to the audience. In this step, I create my script and plan out what will be put in the video. Then, I started filming A-roll parts in order to create the content frame for the video. Personally, I love the idea of putting all of the A-roll parts together before deciding what to add into the video because it gives me the better idea of the video construction. After that, I move straight to the editing step. Instead of researching for images, and video in advanced, I chose to do them and editing at the same time. For me, it is less time-consuming and more effective doing this way. However, unlike video and images, I chose my background music right after I created my script since I found that finding suitable background music. It might sound like an easy job but it always bothers me a lot since it is not easy to find background music that suitable with your video spirit and also meet the copy right’s requirement. My three main sources for this video are Youtube, Flickr and Souncloud. All of the works that I chose to use from these 3 platforms are all under creative commons licensed so they are legal to use.
I have been learning a lot from this video making process. Unlike the introduction video for the first assignment, video that is made to demonstrate and inform people take a lot more effort and work since copy right has always a problem. Luckily, at the end of the day, I finally have some skills to identify the legal source which are allowed to use. However, one of the biggest problems of the video is the final stage. After I uploaded the video on Youtube and and re-watch it, I found that the size of the video frame has been changed into square. For this problem, I still haven’t known what are the reasons behind this change and how to deal with it.
In our digital age, especially when social media platforms become an indispensable part, the concept of online identity has become more noticeable than ever because of the appearance of the significant social media use and new social media trends. However, although people nowadays who are a part of the social media community are actually familiar with the concept of online identity, the definition of online identity when it comes to academic term is still vague to most of them.
Online identity can be defined as the way a person or an organisation presents themselves online. According to Geva, Singer and Tsechansky (2019), online identity can be seen as the result of a self-impression management process that happens in virtual world. In other words, it is a goal-directed process in which many individuals consciously try to control others’ perceptions about themselves on online platforms (Geva, Singer & Tsechansky 2019).
Online identity is the way that people are situated and situate themselves discursively in relation to context-specific social norms, which determine and constitute identities as subject positions on online platforms.
(Smith & Watson 2014)
Social media platforms are one of the most vivid elements that make online identity become a thing in our digital age. According to Geva, Singer and Tsechansky (2019), websites and social media platforms have become a highly significant communication medium because of their quick, easy and 24/7 accessibility which offers users convenient and speedy communication without time and place restraints. As a result, thanks to these features, the proportion of social media users has experienced a significant increase. Moreover, its wide spreadability which creates a huge trend among different communities among places in the world, especially the young, makes building unique online identity become a competition.
According to the magazine article written by Premuzic (2015), our online behavior does not reveal comprehensively our real-life personas since people intentionally upload on social media platforms what they want others to know about. “In the expanding array of virtual environments, identities become increasingly manipulable” (Smith & Watson 2014, p.82). Since social media platforms give the users the freedom to post and upload content that they want, it is hard to evaluate them through their online identity. A person can have many different online identities base on their purposes and their target audience on different platforms.
My online identity varies over different social media platforms since each of them is used for different purposes. While Instagram and Facebook are for private use, my Twitter account is set up for studying purpose. Therefore, friends or followers that connect with me on Facebook or Instagram will see a different identity of me from those who connect with me on Twitter. In this assignment, I’m going to focus on discussing my online identity on Twitter.
Since my Twitter is not for private use, I try to restrict content about my personal life as much as I can because these are not what I want my followers on Twitter to see and to know about. In other words, I try to hide myself from this platform. Instead of putting up pictures of myself on profile and background picture, I use photos that I took myself. However, once again, since my Twitter is for academic use, in the bio part, I still provide true information about me, such as my education, the name of the college and location, so that at least my lecturer and classmates can identify me.
Since I tend to focus more on academic-related content on my Twitter. Having a quick look at my account, tweets about my units make up the majority of my page.
Once people access my account, they can easily see that I tweeted about my About.me site
Hey, my mates! How it's going? If you want to know a little bit more about me, please click on the link below. Let's be friends!https://t.co/h0yxsc9Ipi#alm101dc
The Film Unfriended https://t.co/KJWUGGsQ71 demonstrates the negative impact of social media, Gauntlett suggests “…new media within the mainstream has had an impact, bringing vitality and creativity to the whole area…"https://t.co/TT5QdsuTsE#ALM101DC
On tweets for academic requirement, units code hashtag is always attached to the tweet.
However, just focusing on academic stuff makes it hard for me to keep using Twitter sustainably. Therefore, I also share a small angle about one of my favorite things to do which are cooking and food. The pictures that I tweet are taken by myself so I did not put the reference on the tweet.
Overall, my online identity on Twitter is not too clear since the limit number of tweet. However, it can be easily seen that it is more like an academic account and add up with a little of personal interest.
In this video, I
decided to do a brief introduction with basic information about myself.
However, instead of focusing too much on formal information such as education,
nationality, etc, I decided to share more about my hobbies and daily life
images since I want my video to be easily approachable to the viewers. As my
Youtube channel was created for studying purposes, my target audiences will be
my classmates and lecturers, so that creating a comfortable and friendly
feeling while watching is necessary.
In this video, I
share activities that I love doing on a daily basis. I think this content can
be attractive to a lot of young people since common interests can quickly
connect people and draw their attention. However, the lacking of editing as
well as filming skills makes it hard for me to deliver my content as well as I
expected. The lack of video effect, transition and low variety of filming angle
and background makes the video less attractive for the viewers. However, I
believe that the content was comprehensively expressed in the video and the
viewers can identify the message of the content. Moreover, since it’s my first
time trying to use Adobe Premium Pro, there were a lot of difficulties and
struggles. Therefore, I think that even though the final product is not good
enough, I have learned a lot throughout the making process and these
experiences can be extremely helpful for me later.
Before I started
filming, I created my script and decided what I want to film so that it could
connect to my content tightly. After that, I film all of my A-roll first and
then moved to B-roll shots. Since B-roll shot requested more filming skills, so
I have to try different filming angles for the same shot and choose the best
one from them. My B-roll shots are based on my script. They allow viewers to
have a closer look at what I am saying from A-roll shot. So even though I do
not have good filming skill, I tried my best to bring out the best B-roll shots
that I can
However, it can be
easily recognised that there are two different backgrounds for my A-roll shots.
Since I lost some A-roll footage without recognising so that I had to film
again in a different location which was not a great idea for the video.
Moreover, audio is also a problem in this video. I try to improve my audio
quality by using the mic from the earphone. However, since I did not notice
that my hair clashes into my mic when I’m moving. Therefore, there are some
uncomfortable sounds in the video.
What’s up, I’m Ashleigh. I’m currently a communication student at Deakin College, Melbourne VIC, Australia.
I love food and cooking. I cook almost every day of the week since I have been craving home-cooked Vietnamese meals which are almost impossible to find in Melbourne.
I am also interested in photography but sadly I’m suck at it. So if you are better at it than I am (of course everyone is ), please help me with that and I will pay you back by some cozy meals if you want.
